Military bases abroad part of U.S. geopolitics - expert

MOSCOW. Nov 11 (Interfax) - By establishing military bases abroad the U.S. leadership is defending its geopolitical interests around the world, said Col. Gen Leonid Ivashov, vice-president of the Geopolitical Problems Academy.

"By establishing its bases abroad the United States is realizing its global plans," Ivashov, who earlier headed the International Military Cooperation Department in the Russian Defense Ministry, said at a roundtable in Moscow on Friday.

U.S. priorities are "to ensure secure access to key regions of the world, strategic communications and global resources," he said.

Foreign military bases on the territory of the former Soviet Union pose "a real military threat to Russia," he said.
