BBN brings in $9.5M DARPA contract

BBNT Solutions LLC was awarded a $9.5 million cost-plus-fixed-fee contract from the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency for an artificial intelligence system for automatic language translation.

Better known as BBN � one of the inventors of the foundation of the Internet � the Cambridge-based company won the contract through a Web-based bid solicitation process.

DARPA�s Autonomous Global Integrated Language Exploitation (AGILE) research program is a large, multiple institution project with the aim of developing speech and language processing technologies to recognize, analyze, and translate speech and text into readable English.

The goal of the program is to eliminate the need for linguists and analysts and automatically provide relevant information to military command and personnel in a timely fashion.

The contract runs through October 2010.
