Maples takes charge at DIA

The Defense Intelligence Agency has a new director. Army Maj. Gen. Michael D. Maples assumed the top job at DIA in a ceremony earlier this month at the agency’s Analysis Center at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C.

Maples replaces Navy Vice Adm. Lowell E. Jacoby, who had held the position since Oct. 17, 2002.

Earlier this year, Jacoby said DIA would be soon taking over operational control and managing the IT spending of the 10 unified combatant commands. Jacoby said the move was designed to control the IT spending of the commands while centralizing management of Defense information systems.

“We cannot hold sacred the things we’ve done in the past,” Jacoby said.

Maples formerly worked as vice director and director of management for the Joint Staff. He also served as the former commanding general of the Army Field Artillery Center and director of operations, readiness and mobilization for the service’s Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans.

Maples graduated from West Point and earned a master’s degree in organizational behavior from Pacific Lutheran University.
