Russia starts building fourth-generation submarine

SEVERODVINSK (Arkhangelsk region), March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia has started the construction of a fourth-generation strategic nuclear-powered submarine at the Sevmash plant in Severodvinsk. The event was timed to coincide with the centenary of the national submarine forces.

“This is the second submarine of the Borei class, named the Vladimir Monomakh,” Navy Commander Admiral Vladimir Masorin said. “One billion rubles are assigned for building this submarine in 2006. The sub will be carrying Bulava new strategic missiles.”

Sevmash is completing the construction of the Yuri Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky submarines. “They will be delivered to the Northern and Pacific fleets,” the admiral said.

“More than six fourth-generation submarines will be build within a decade, which will modernize the Russian naval strategic nuclear forces,” he said.
